UAE residence fine reduction: Requirements, Documents and Fees 2026
UAE residence fine reduction is an official service from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). It lets you apply to reduce the administrative fines caused by late residence renewal or by overstaying after your permitted period ended. The total application fee is AED 253.20 per person including VAT, and a decision is issued within 2 working days through ICP smart services once requirements are complete.
Submitting a UAE residence fine reduction application does not mean automatic approval. The decision depends on the reason for the violation and the documents that prove it. This guide covers who is eligible, the documents needed for each case, how to apply, and what to do after the decision so the reduction is not cancelled.
October 2026 update: You can now submit the residence fine reduction request through ICP customer happiness centres and approved typing offices, in addition to the smart services platform and the UAEICP app.
2026 update: ICP announced an exceptional waiver of overstay fines incurred from 28 February 2026, after airspace closures and flight suspensions left travellers unable to leave. The waiver was cancelled with effect from 10 June 2026, followed by a 30-day grace period that ended on 9 July 2026. Since then, the fine reduction request explained in this guide is the route available to anyone whose circumstances justify the violation.
What is the UAE residence fine reduction service?
The service allows customers to request a reduction of, or exemption from, administrative fines incurred for delayed residence renewal or for staying in the country after a visa expires. Applications are accepted for specified cases, or similar cases that meet the reduction conditions.
Who benefits from UAE residence fine reduction
- Residents: whose residence renewal was delayed for reasons beyond their control.
- Visitors: who overstayed their visa, mainly in cases of hospital admission.
- Government entities, private companies and free zone establishments: when employee residence renewals cannot be completed because of the company’s circumstances.
Who can submit the application?
The application can be submitted by the violator, the sponsor, the host, the employer, or their legal representative. The beneficiary must be inside the UAE at the time of applying, and a separate application is required for each person.
How much is the overstay fine in the UAE?
The daily fine is unified for expired residence visas and visit or tourist visas: AED 50 for each day after the visa and any renewal grace period expire. It keeps accruing daily until you regularise your status or leave the country, so the earlier you apply for a fine reduction, the smaller the amount that builds up.
Example: someone who is 120 days late renewing their residence accumulates fines of around AED 6,000. This is where a reduction or exemption request pays off, if the delay was beyond their control.
Documents required for UAE residence fine reduction
A passport is required in every UAE residence fine reduction case. Supporting documents then depend on the category and the reason for the violation.
1. Residents
Basic requirements: passport, a letter explaining the reasons for the violation, and the supporting document for your case from the table below:
| Reason for the reduction request | Supporting document |
| Passport issuance delayed by embassy or consulate procedures | Letter from the embassy or consulate, attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs |
| Disputes or cases under review by the competent authorities | Certificate from the authority handling the dispute or case |
| Death of the employer or sponsor outside the UAE | Duly attested death certificate |
| Relatives of UAE nationals | Proof of kinship |
| Hospitalised patients | Medical report in Arabic, issued by a government health authority and duly certified |
2. Visitors
A passport and supporting documents for the case are required. The specified case is hospital admission, which requires a medical report in Arabic issued by a government health authority and duly certified.
3. Government entities, private companies and free zone establishments
If residence renewal is not possible because of the company’s circumstances, attach a report from Al Etihad Credit Bureau showing the company’s debts in Arabic, together with one of the following supporting documents:
- A full financial statement in Arabic, certified by an approved auditor.
- Court judgments issued against the establishment.
- A certificate issued by the court regarding the owner.
- A certificate proving the owner is imprisoned or has been outside the UAE for more than 6 months.
- An official certificate or document from a competent government authority proving a restriction that prevents residence renewal.
4. Other cases
If none of the above applies, enter the details of your exemption case in the designated field. Explain the circumstances that led to the violation or prevented you from correcting your status, and attach proof.
How to check your residence fines before applying
Before applying, check your file status and the fines accumulated:
- Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates: ICP smart services website → Public Services → File Validity, then search by file number or passport details.
- Dubai: the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) website → visa status enquiry service.
The result shows your file number, Unified ID, visa status, and issue and expiry dates.
How to apply for UAE residence fine reduction
Applications are submitted through ICP’s approved channels: the smart services platform or UAEICP app (sign in with UAE PASS, username or QR code), customer happiness centres, or ICP-approved typing offices. The service path in the system is: Emirate → Fines → Individuals → Visa, Residence or Newborns → Fine Reduction Request.
- Submit the application through an approved channel and select the service.
- Review the application details and update them if needed, especially your phone number and email.
- Attach the required documents if they are not already available through institutional linkage.
- Pay the service fees.
- Receive a notification of the outcome, approval or rejection, by SMS and email registered in the application.
UAE residence fine reduction fees and processing time
UAE residence fine reduction fees are the same for all categories: residents, visitors and entities.
| Item | Amount (AED) | VAT (AED) |
| Application fee | 100.00 | 0.00 |
| E-services fee | 28.00 | 1.40 |
| Federal Authority fee | 122.00 | 0.00 |
| E-payment fee | 1.71 | 0.09 |
| Total incl. VAT | 253.20 | 1.49 |
Fees are paid for each person separately. Processing time depends on the channel:
| Channel | Availability | Processing time after requirements are complete |
| ICP smart services platform | 24/7 | 2 working days |
| UAEICP app | 24/7 | 2 working days |
| Customer happiness centres (exceptional cases) | Published working hours | 1 working day (10 min wait, 7 min service) |
There is no upper or lower limit for submitting an application, as long as the specified conditions are met.
Is overstay fine reduction different in Dubai?
Yes. The service in this guide belongs to ICP and covers residence visas issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.
Dubai residence and visit visas fall under the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai. Fine reduction requests there are submitted through Amer centres or the Al Awir centre, and a violations committee decides each case individually. You can call the toll-free number 8005111 for enquiries.
What happens after the reduction is approved?
Approval opens two consecutive deadlines. Missing either one means losing the reduction:
- 7 days to pay: the violator or sponsor has 7 days from the date the partial exemption is approved to pay the reduced fines. If they are not paid, the exemption decision is cancelled.
- 30 days to regularise status: after payment, the customer has 30 days to obtain residence or leave the UAE. If the period ends without regularisation, fines are recalculated from the day after the grace period ends.
Important: fines continue to accrue while the application is under review, until a decision is issued. If the application is rejected, the customer pays the full amount of the fines.
Missing documents and tracking your application
You can track your UAE residence fine reduction application through the follow-up services on the smart platforms. If anything is missing, the application is returned to you for completion under these rules:
- An application can be returned for amendment up to 3 times.
- If 30 days pass after an application is returned without amendment, it is automatically rejected.
- The beneficiary may be asked to visit the competent Department of Violators and Foreigners Affairs if needed.
If rejected: ICP usually states the reason, but reserves the right not to disclose it. Only the refundable fees shown on the payment receipt are returned, to the card used for payment within 6 months of the application date, or by cheque or bank transfer to a UAE bank after that.
Tips to improve your chances of UAE residence fine reduction approval
Most returns and rejections come from an unclear reason or a missing document. Before submitting, make sure you:
- Identify your category and the reason for the reduction request accurately.
- Write the reasons and circumstances of the violation clearly, not a general reason without support.
- Attach the right document for your case, and check it is legible and attested where required.
- Check your phone number and email, as they are how you receive the decision and any requests.
- Follow up and complete any missing items before 30 days pass.
- After approval, pay within 7 days, then regularise your status within 30 days.
